{"id":1690,"date":"2017-04-20T14:49:19","date_gmt":"2017-04-20T18:49:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/granitestatetaxpayers.org\/gst\/?p=1690"},"modified":"2017-05-16T19:57:45","modified_gmt":"2017-05-16T23:57:45","slug":"gst-chairman-testifies-for-sb3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/granitestatetaxpayers.org\/gst\/gst-chairman-testifies-for-sb3\/","title":{"rendered":"GST Chairman Testifies for SB3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Chairman Ray Chadwick testified for SB3 to the House Election Law Committee Tuesday 4\/18\/17.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><a href=\"https:\/\/granitestatetaxpayers.org\/gst\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/SB3Summary170418.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to see a summary of Chadwick&#8217;s testimony.<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=efSYuDtpzAk\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to see video of Chadwick&#8217;s testimony.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>SB3 would require New Hampshire voters to be residents and provide documentation that they are.<\/strong><br \/>\nCurrently, 49 states and the District of Columbia require voters to be residents and provide proof of residency.<br \/>\n47 states and the District of Columbia also require residency for up to 30 days before being allowed to vote.<br \/>\nIn Massachusetts, people who cannot provide proof of residency before the polls close, are not allowed to vote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Because of the laxity of our laws, people can vote in New Hampshire who are not residents here.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Requiring voters to be residents where they vote is not novel or &#8220;unconstitutional&#8221;. <\/strong><br \/>\nThe Supreme Court stated in 1972 that:<br \/>\n<em>\u201cStates have the power to require that voters be bona fide residents of the relevant political subdivision.\u201d<\/em><br \/>\nIn 2012 and 2014, 16,978 people registered to vote in New Hampshire using out of state ID.<br \/>\nIn 2016, 6,540 people registered to vote here using out of state driver&#8217;s licenses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SB3 has passed the Senate and is now being reviewed by the House Election Law Committee.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Contact the Election Law Committee members to show your support for SB3.<\/strong><br \/>\n<em><a href=\"http:\/\/gencourt.state.nh.us\/house\/committees\/committeedetails.aspx?code=H36\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to see the members of the House Election Law Committee.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gencourt.state.nh.us\/bill_status\/billText.aspx?sy=2017&amp;id=885&amp;txtFormat=pdf&amp;v=current\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to read SB3.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Granite State Taxpayers<\/em> is New Hampshire&#8217;s oldest statewide taxpayer association.
