{"id":3492,"date":"2019-01-07T17:23:34","date_gmt":"2019-01-07T22:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/granitestatetaxpayers.org\/gst\/?p=3492"},"modified":"2020-04-21T17:04:54","modified_gmt":"2020-04-21T21:04:54","slug":"election-reforms-at-risk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/granitestatetaxpayers.org\/gst\/election-reforms-at-risk\/","title":{"rendered":"Return of Drive-By Voting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The NH Legislature is Considering Bills to Eliminate the Reforms of Senate Bill 3 and House Bill 1264.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/granitestatetaxpayers.org\/gst\/new-hampshire-citizens-should-decide-new-hampshire-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>GST<\/em> has long advocated for reform of New Hampshire Election Laws.<\/a><br \/>\n<em>GST<\/em> supports legislation so that people who vote in New Hampshire actually live in New Hampshire.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Hampshire is unique in the country in allowing people to vote who are residents of other states.<\/strong><br \/>\nAn out of state driver\u2019s license certainly provides proof of identity, but also proves residency in another state.<br \/>\nIn 2016, 6,540 people used an out of state driver\u2019s license to register and vote in New Hampshire.<br \/>\n491 used an out of state driver\u2019s license to change registration from one New Hampshire town to another.<br \/>\n<strong>New Hampshire is unique in allowing people to vote here without documenting a presence in state.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>GST<\/em> has worked the past two years with allies who stand for election integrity and reform.<\/strong><br \/>\nAllies like Secretary of State Bill Gardner, Rep. Barbara Griffin, Sen. Regina Birdsell and Gov. Chris Sununu.<br \/>\nSenate Bill (SB) 3 required registrants to provide documentation showing a presence in state.<br \/>\nHouse Bill (HB) 1264 defined residency to close the loophole allowing residents of other states to vote here.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Both Senate Bill 3 and House Bill 1264 were strenuously opposed by Democrats. <\/strong><br \/>\nThe New Hampshire Democratic Party filed a (continuing) lawsuit against Senate Bill 3.<br \/>\nThey hosted speakers to argue that HB 1264 implements a &#8220;poll tax&#8221; because residents need to pay taxes.<br \/>\nBill Gardner supported SB 3, then Colin VanOstern ran against him for control of the Secretary of State office.<br \/>\nDemocrat leaders filed briefs before the NH Supreme Court opposing HB 1264.
