Some Manchester Aldermen Have a History of Voting to Ignore the City’s Tax Cap

On November 8, 2011 Manchester voters approved changes to the City Charter to include a Spending Cap to limit budget and spending increases to the rate of inflation, and check the growth of spending.

Certain Manchester Aldermen (in italics below; click on titles to link to original sources) have a history of voting to override the cap, or voting for contracts that exceed the cap, or overriding Mayoral vetoes of contracts or budgets that would exceed the cap.

Discussion of tax cap override laced with drama

“For the first time since the voter-approved tax cap went into effect three years ago, the aldermen on Tuesday voted to override it, citing the need to deal with rising crime, abysmal roads and other lagging city services. The approved budget is 3.99 percent larger than last year’s, exceeding the tax cap by 1.86 percent. With a new combined tax rate of $23.58, taxes on a $200,000 house would go up by close to $200, to $4,716.”
