Governor Sununu Signed Senate Bill 3 Into Law on Monday July 10, 2017
“Voting in our state and our nation is perhaps the most important right we have as citizens. It is crucial in the First in the Nation Presidential Primary State that we protect the integrity of each vote cast in an election,” said SB3 Sponsor Senator Regina Birdsell (R-Hampstead). “This is why this legislation requires individuals who vote here to simply provide proof that they live where they say they do. This bill allows all Granite Staters to vote in every election and provides clearer guidelines for casting a ballot.”
“I am proud of the work done by the legislature on this bill that both balances the need to protect our elections from inappropriately cast ballots with making sure that every eligible voter has the opportunity to vote and I am pleased to have Governor Sununu’s support on this critical legislation,” Birdsell added.
“Granite State Taxpayers applauds a requirement that people registering to vote here actually show proof that they are from New Hampshire,” said GST Chairman Ray Chadwick. “This new law implements in New Hampshire an expectation that is already in place in 49 states and the District of Columbia.”
Advocating for election integrity has been a specific objective of Granite State Taxpayers for five years.
On July 18, 2012, GST posted the following remarks from then Chairman Jim Adams:
“Granite State Taxpayers protects the rights of New Hampshire taxpayers by advocating for laws and regulations beneficial to taxpayers, for reducing government spending, and for more efficient government services. Ultimately, the security of our legislative system, and with it the results of our efforts on behalf of taxpayers, rests on the integrity of the voting system, which is based on the concept of “one citizen, one vote”. When people who are not legally entitled to do so are allowed to vote, it nullifies the votes of legal voters.”
“We now need to prepare to defend SB3 against the inevitable court challenges,” said Chadwick.
Granite State Taxpayers is New Hampshire’s oldest statewide taxpayer association. Founded in 1990 by former Governor Mel Thomson and former State Senator George Lovejoy, our mission is to inform, educate and motivate New Hampshire taxpayers and to influence the legislature on their behalf.
